US Dollar drops Against the Brazilian Real

On Monday, the Brazilian Real showed to be stronger than the US dollar during New York trading. The exceptional rise of the currency has many reasons but one of them is that the US dollar dropped to a 12-day low of 2.3080 against the real. Also, Brazil's central bank shows that the amount of deficit for the month of December in 2008 is $2.92 billion compared to a $498 million in the same month in 2007.

Brazil's Economy Strong Amongst World Crisis

Brazilian economy rose in a surprising way past Monday and as a result, the stocks of bank shares stood out amongst others. For example, the Bovespa index (BSVP) of the Sao Paulo stock exchange closed 0.99 percent higher this week. "The international market is having a lot to do with that" said Mario Battistel, head of currency trading at brokerage Fair in Sao Paulo.

Brazil Creates Jobs By Building Submarines

The Brazilian Navy has signed a cooperation agreement with France that will hopefully bring more employment to the region. The French Government will share some of their technology so that five submarines can be built in Brazil. The Brazilian government hopes that this will generate more industry and employment growth.

Latin American Leaders Convene in Brazil to Discuss Financial Crisis

In Costa do Sauipe, Brazil leaders from most Latin American countries (except for Peru's Garcia and Colombia's Uribe) met to the global economic crisis. As foreign capital diminishes and commodity prices fall, investment in Latin America is rapidly falling. One of the many problems that this is causing for the region is that governments are having to cut back on social and infrastructure spending.

Inter Milan President Confident Brazilian Adriano Will Stay in Serie A Club

While the Brazilian striker Adriano is recovering from a thigh injury, there are speculations as to what team he will be playing for when he is fit again. Currently in Brazil, Adriano has supposedly received interest from soccer clubs in Chelsea and Flamengo. However, Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti is sure that the Brazilian will continue to play for the Serie A club.

Brazilian Indigenous Rights Protected through Brazilian Supreme Court Decision

The supreme court of Brazil has rejected a challenge to the boundaries of an Amazonian Indian reservation that is half the size of Belgium. This decision is beneficial to the autonomic rights for indigenous people living in Brazilian reservations. Currently, there are 488 reservations that make up about 12% of Brazil's territory.

Brazilian soccer superstar, Ronaldo, is officially joining the Corinthians, the Sao Paulo soccer club. This was announced after months of not knowing, where or if, Ronaldo would play. A new bridge is to be built over the Mamore River connecting the Brazilian city of Guajara-Mirim and the city of Guayaramer in Bolivia. A symbol of growing SouthAmerican integration, the project is set to be completed in 2010 and will facilitate traffic between the two countries.

Brazil Set for New Baseball Facility

The Tampa Bay Rays will collaborate with the city of Maríla in Brazil to build a training facility for upcoming baseball players. The team hopes to capitalise on the growing popularity of the sport to spot emerging talent in the country of 200 million people. Gerry Hunsicker, Rays senior vice president for baseball operations, stated that "This is an exciting opportunity for us to be a pioneer in a country we feel will be the next major source of baseball talent."
