Brazil Wins South American Beach Soccer Championship

The South American Beach Soccer Championship, hosted by Uruguay, had Brazil as its three-time champion. The sands of Pocitos Beach in Montevideo were the field where Brazil won the championship against Uruguay. The tournament took place between 11 and 15 March. Virley Stanley Conforme (Ecuador) won the best player award. The best goalkeeper was awarded to the Brazilian goalkeeper, Mao and the top scorer was given to Andre, the Brazilian forward.

Ronaldo Soon to Be Back to the National Team

Ronaldo, a great soccer player for the past decades, is slowly recovering from a serious kee injury that did not allow him to play for more than a year. After his return, the Brazilian people are excited to have their world-class star playing for a Brazilian club and to score again to their delight. Although Dunga, the Brazilian coach, has said that it is too soon to consider chances of him being in the national team he asked to wait until Ronaldo reaches his optimal fitness.

Prince Charles Visits Brazil's President

British Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall, visited Brazil yesterday. The prince will visit many of the authorities in the country as well as NGOs in order to establish partnership and support to the community; he will also arrive to the Amazon cities of Manaus and Santarem to visit poor communities. The entire country salutes the prince while the authorities will discuss ways to work with the British royalty and government.

Capoeira Invades the UK

Capoeira is a sport that is similar to martial arts but requires no contact. Capoeira was originated among the African slaves brought to Brazil by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. It is also considered a dance because of the coordinated movements; the intention of the roots of capoeira is to develop a way of fighting disguising it as a dance. Now this popular sport (2nd after soccer in Brazil) has reached many parts of the world and one of them is the UK where it is being taught by native Brazilians and followed by many enthusiasts that find it as the perfect exercise.

Brazil Receives $1.3 Billion for Environmental Programs

Brazil is getting a boost in their environmental management. The World Bank has approved a $1.3 Billion loan for the purpose of reinforcing and developing environmental programs. This is very important for the country because of the richness and wild variety of species that have Brazil as their habitat. Brazil covers 60% of the Amazon, which is one third of the world's tropical rainforests. Brazil already has a very environmentally friendly system of transportation run by ethanol and flex fuel (a blend of ethanol and gasoline).

Tourism Helps Brazilian Economy During World Crisis

Visitors to Brazil are having an important impact on the country's finances thanks to the additional revenues that the tourism sector creates. During the first two months of the year, Brazil's tourism revenues have increased by 20%. Brazil had 2.55 million visitors in January and February of 2009, 50,000 more than last year. Hotel sales have increased along with many other services including car rentals, flights, and restaurants. One of the main attractions has been the Rio de Janeiro Carnival which brought 719,000 people to Brazil. Local tourism has increased as well but the majority of tourists are still foreign.

Tour d'Afrique Comes To Brazil

Tour d'Afrique, one of the biggest cycling expedition groups, is to organize the world's most longest and most challenging bicycle expedition ever attempted, starting in Rio de Janeiro and finishing in Quito, Ecuador. The expedition will cover 7200 miles of South American territory going through places like Iguazu Falls, Mount Aconcagua, the Atacama Desert, Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu and along the coasts of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The expedition starts 26th July 2009 and will end on 6th December 2009.

And the winner is.. Salgueiro!

Last Wednesday Samba school Salgueiro was awarded the maximum prize, to be the champion of the Carnival competition of Rio de Janeiro. The world known parade has many contestants and it embraces a healthy sense of competition among the different samba schools and groups that conserve and practice the art of dancing and playing the distinctive traditional music of Brazil. The people of Salgueiro are extremely excited and they cannot expect to feel any less because this is a major achievement. Their theme was the importance of drums along the different cultures and styles that has been practiced through the centuries.
