Paraty, a well-preserved colonial relic, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1966. The Paraty harbor was an important port for the transportation of goods to mining towns in Minas Gerais and for sending gold back to Portugal, becoming one of the most important ports in Brazil in the 17th century. Paraty is now famous for its cobblestone streets that are washed by seawater during high tide.
