Straddling the Argentina-Brazil border, the Iguazu Falls are a force of nature. Iguazu means big water in Guarani, the regional indigenous language and, with over 61,600 cubic feet per second of water gushing over the basalt rock, this impressive waterfall system is adequately named. It is one the largest and most powerful water systems in the world, containing some 270 waterfalls, a few over 250 feet tall. At the Garganta do Diabo, or Devil’s Throat, water plunges over a 490 by 2,300-foot U-shaped cataract, a spectacular sight that creates a permanent cloud of mist nearly 100 feet high.
The areas surrounding the falls are impressive as well. This lush region makes for some of the most beautiful parks and vistas in South America. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, the falls and the surrounding grounds have been preserved in two national parks, one in Brazil and one in Argentina.

The Itapúa Dam is one of the biggest building sites in the world. Since 1975 the dam has provided a model of green energy, providing most of the power to the nation of Paraguay. Only the new construction of a dam in China will beat this mighty feat of human engineering. On the tour you will learn about the dam’s construction and see beautiful areas of the lake. The dam is open to visitors every day except Sundays and Brazilian public holidays. Note: This trip can be combined with a trip to the Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls to make it a full day trip to Brazil.
