Considered by Chileans to be the world's southernmost city (and called the Gateway City to Antarctica), Punta Arenas (pop. 112,000) was an important supply station for ships prior to the completion of the Panama Canal. The city is located on the shores of the Magellan Straits of and remains the commercial and financial nucleus of the area. Punta Arenas is also the gateway to the wonderful nature found in the Chilean Patagonia, including: Torres del Paine National Park (see Puerto Natales), Tierra del Fuego, lakes, fjords and glaciers. Flamingos, penguins and ñandus (local ostrich) can be seen at close range by wildlife enthusiasts, when season and weather allow.
