Why travel to Praia do Forte
Praia do Forte, a former fishing village on a beautiful coconut tree-lined coast, is located 35 miles (60 kilometers) north of Salvador. In recent years this village has been transformed into an ecologically sensitive, up-market beach resort attracting visitors from Salvador and abroad.
Despite its modern development, Praia do Forte has retained its tranquil charm. The town received its name from the Fortress built by the Captain Garcia D'Ávila, who obtained an enormous chunk of land from the Portuguese crown in order to stimulate settlent of the Portuguese colony. It is one of the biggest fortifications built in Latin America.
The rainforest surrounding Praia do Forte is protected by the Sapiranga Ecological Reserve. An interesting place to visit is the Sea Turtle Research Project (Projeto Tamar), where turtle eggs are nursed before bringing them safely to sea.
What to do in Praia do Forte
Praia do Forte is a simple seaside village that is just beginning to come to terms with its own popularity among Brazilian and international visitors. A short 2-hour bus ride from Salvador de Bahia, the main draw of this town is the turtles. A non-government organization dedicated to the conservation and educational promotion of turtles has set up Projeto Tamar, a sanctuary where visitors can see many varieties of the lovable sea creatures year round. Feeding time is always a delight for children, where they can watch the turtles scramble for their next bite, and summer is when newly hatched turtles are released into the sea.
It is easy to get around the entire town in 1 day, which is part of the charm of this tranquil retreat. Walk to the beach, one of the clearest and most idyllic in all of Brazil. Numerous tide pools serve as homes for exotic wildlife before they set off into the ocean, and the water is so pristine that you won’t even need a snorkel mask to see the thousands of vibrant fish swimming around your feet. From July to October, take a boating excursion on your Praia do Forte holiday to see humpback whales in all their glory, or even go paragliding for a particularly unique overhead perspective!
In town, the Castelo do Garcia d’Avila is a large medieval-style mansion built on the land once owned by a cow farmer, the plot given to him by the ruling party as part of an initiative to more efficiently colonize Praia do Forte. It was built in 1551 by the orders of Captain Garcia D'Ávila and is just 4.5 miles (7 kilometers) from town, an easy walk or short mototaxi ride. Its hilltop location makes it a great location for taking pictures of the brilliant sweeping Brazilian coastal vista.
If you want a break from the beach, the Sapiranga Ecological Reserve is also a short distance from Praia do Forte. The Atlantic rainforest environment is a sharp but refreshing departure from the sandy beaches, including over 1,482 acres (600 hectares) of luscious fauna. There are 7 well-posted trails if you wish to get some exercise, some of which lead down to the Pojuca River. Bring your bathing suit because you’ll want to take a dip after walking around in the hot Brazilian heat all afternoon!
When to visit Praia do Forte
Praia do Forte has an ideal climate the whole year for visiting with annual average temperatures around 80°F (27°C). May to July is the rainy season but does not greatly affect activities in the zone. Expect accommodations to fill up during Brazilian holidays.

I have to admit that, before the trip began, I had experienced some apprehension, wondering if everything planned would be carried out as promised... Now that I'm back, I can say for sure that one can definitely depend on Latin America For Less! Your itinerary specially tailored for us did really work like clockwork from the moment we met our first tour representative in Rio de Janeiro all the way to our last destination before we flew to Sao Paulo from Lima!
